The beaches

Salento is known for the dialect expression “lu sule, lu mare e lu ientu,” which literally means “the sun, the sea, and the wind.” This phrase represents the natural elements that characterize this land.

Thus, sea conditions are greatly influenced by the winds, making the choice of beach a decision to consider carefully, especially in June, when winds like Tramontana, Grecale, and Scirocco are common.

– Tramontana: This cold wind comes from the north and makes the Adriatic Sea more choppy. During Tramontana, Ionian beaches like Gallipoli and Torre San Giovanni offer calmer and clearer waters, perfect for a relaxing day.

– Scirocco: Coming from the southeast, Scirocco is hot and humid, creating better conditions on the Adriatic side, especially to the north of Otranto.

– Grecale: This northeast wind cools the temperatures and makes the Adriatic Sea rough, while the Ionian coast remains generally calm and welcoming for those looking to enjoy peaceful beaches like the “Maldive del Salento” or Porto Cesareo.

For the month of June, it’s often recommended to check the weather forecast to assess the direction of the winds and choose whether to visit the Adriatic or Ionian Sea, in order to find ideal conditions for swimming and relaxing based on the prevailing wind.
